Indicated for the acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia
Used for treating acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder
Antipsychotic agent with affinities for serotonin, dopamine, cholinergic, adrenergic, and histamine receptors
Well absorbed after oral administration, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 5 to 8 hours
Dosage adjustment range from 5-20 mg daily based on individual clinical status
Can be given without regard to meals
May antagonize the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient and in patients with known risk for narrow-angle glaucoma
Common side effects include somnolence, weight gain, increased appetite, elevated glucose and triglyceride levels, dizziness, akathisia, etc.
Should be used cautiously in patients with history of seizures, low leukocyte and/or neutrophil counts, hypereosinophilic conditions, impaired hepatic function
Not studied in subjects under 18 years of age, starting dose for elderly patients is 5 mg/day, starting dose for patients with hepatic or renal impairment is 5 mg/day
