Description
- Indicated for the acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia
- Used for treating acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder
- Antipsychotic agent with affinities for serotonin, dopamine, cholinergic, adrenergic, and histamine receptors
- Well absorbed after oral administration, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 5 to 8 hours
- Dosage adjustment range from 5-20 mg daily based on individual clinical status
- Can be given without regard to meals
- May antagonize the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient and in patients with known risk for narrow-angle glaucoma
- Common side effects include somnolence, weight gain, increased appetite, elevated glucose and triglyceride levels, dizziness, akathisia, etc.
- Should be used cautiously in patients with history of seizures, low leukocyte and/or neutrophil counts, hypereosinophilic conditions, impaired hepatic function
- Not studied in subjects under 18 years of age, starting dose for elderly patients is 5 mg/day, starting dose for patients with hepatic or renal impairment is 5 mg/day
- Therapeutic class: Atypical neuroleptic drugs
- Storage conditions: Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture, keep out of the reach of children
