Description
- Olme is indicated for the treatment of hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
- Olmesartan blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II

Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Angiotensin II is the principal pressor agent of the renin-angiotensin system
- Olmesartan blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT 1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of Olmesartan is 20 mg once daily
- For patients requiring further reduction in blood pressure, the dose may be increased to 40 mg
- No initial dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients, for patients with moderate to marked renal impairment or with moderate to marked hepatic dysfunction
- Olmesartan may be administered with or without food
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with digoxin or warfarin
- Olme is not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
- Caution advised when co-administering with Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
- Potential attenuation of antihypertensive effect by NSAIDs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Incidence of adverse reactions similar to placebo
- Most common adverse reaction: dizziness
- Other adverse reactions include back pain, bronchitis, diarrhea, headache, hyperglycemia, and cough
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Discontinue use when pregnancy is detected
- Can cause injury to developing fetus when used in the second and third trimesters
- Potential excretion in human milk with adverse effects on nursing infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Changes in renal function may be anticipated in susceptible individuals treated with Olme
- Treatment associated with oliguria and/or progressive azotemia in some patients
Overdose Effects
- No experience of overdose with Olme
- Most likely effects: hypotension and tachycardia
- Clinically significant hypotension requires active support of cardiovascular system
