Indications
- Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcer
- NSAID-associated duodenal and gastric ulcer treatment
- Prophylaxis for patients with a history of NSAID-associated duodenal and gastric ulcer

Pharmacology
- Substituted benzimidazole
- Inhibitor of gastric acid secretion
- Blocks hydrogen-potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system
- Onset of antisecretory effect within one hour
- Maximum effect within two hours
- Inhibition of secretion lasts up to 72 hours
- Gradual return of secretory activity over 3 to 5 days upon discontinuation

Interaction
- Reduction in ketoconazole absorption during treatment
- Metabolism through cytochrome P450 affecting diazepam, phenytoin, and warfarin
- Monitoring and potential dose adjustment for warfarin or phenytoin during concomitant treatment
- Increase in plasma concentrations of Stosec and clarithromycin during concurrent administration
- No interaction with phenacetin, theophylline, caffeine, and more
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Omeprazole
- Suspected gastric ulcer should exclude possibility of malignancy before treatment
Side Effects
- Mild and reversible adverse reactions
- Reported reactions include skin rash, urticaria, pruritus, photosensitivity, diarrhea, headache, constipation, nausea/vomiting, and more
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adverse effects on pregnancy or fetus/newborn child in epidemiological studies
- Suitable for use during pregnancy, no available information on passage into breast milk
- Discontinuation of breastfeeding if essential use of Omeprazole is considered
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid concomitant use of clopidogrel and Stosec
- Observational association of PPI therapy with increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures
- Atrophic gastritis noted occasionally in long-term treatment with Stosec
- Potential for methotrexate toxicities with concomitant use of PPIs
