Indications
- Treatment of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum
- Treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia
- Treatment of diarrhea caused by Entamoeba histolytica
Pharmacology
- Synthetic antiprotozoal agent for oral administration
- Interference with the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR) enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for age 1-3 years
- Recommended dosage for age 4-11 years
- Recommended dosage for age 12 years or above
Interaction
- Highly bound to plasma protein
- Caution when administering concurrently with other highly plasma protein-bound drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Nitazoxanide
Side Effects
- Frequent side effects: abdominal pain, vomiting, headache
- Rare side effects: nausea, anorexia, enlarged salivary glands, dizziness, discolored urine
