Indications and Usage
- Monotherapy in adults for the treatment of partial seizures
- Adjunctive therapy in adults for the treatment of partial seizures
- Monotherapy in children aged 4-16 years for the treatment of partial seizures
- Adjunctive therapy in children aged 2-16 years for the treatment of partial seizures
Pharmacology
- Exerts activity through the metabolite derivative of Oxcarbazepine (MHD)
- Blocks voltage-sensitive sodium channels
- Stabilizes hyper excited neural membranes
- Inhibits repetitive neuronal firing
- Diminishes propagation of synaptic impulses
Dosage and Administration - Adults
- Initial dose of 600 mg/day given twice-a-day
- Maximum recommended daily dose of 1200 mg/day for adjunctive therapy
- Conversion to monotherapy involves withdrawal over 3 to 6 weeks and reaching a recommended daily dose of 2400 mg/day
- Initiation of monotherapy involves increments of 300 mg/day every third day to a dose of 1200 mg/day
Dosage and Administration - Pediatrics
- Initiation dose range of 8 to 10 mg/kg/day given twice-a-day
- Maximum maintenance dose should not exceed 60 mg/kg/day for patients aged 2 to under 4 years
- Conversion to monotherapy for patients aged 4-16 years involves maximum increment of 10 mg/kg/day at weekly intervals
- Initiation of monotherapy for patients aged 4-16 years involves increments of 5 mg/kg/day every third day
Interaction
- Inhibits the enzyme CYP2C19
- Interactions with medicinal products metabolised by CYP2C19
- Interactions with hormonal contraceptives
- Interactions with felodipine and Verapamil
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients

- Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, and urticaria
Pregnancy
- May cause serious birth defects when administered during pregnancy
- Bleeding disorders in the newborn caused by antiepileptic agents reported
- Vitamin K1 administration as a preventive measure during the last few weeks of pregnancy and to the newborn
Lactation
- Excretion of Oxcarbazepine and its active metabolite in human breast milk
- Not recommended for use during breastfeeding
Precautions and Warnings
- Caution with alcohol consumption due to possible additive sedative effect
- Withdrawal should be gradual to minimize the potential of increased seizure frequency
