Pharmacology
- Anticholinergic drug
- Reduces the effect of acetylcholine
- Direct relaxing effect on smooth muscle
- Inhibits gastrointestinal propulsive motility
- Decreases gastric acid secretion
- Controls excessive pharyngeal, tracheal, and bronchial secretions
Dosage & Administration
- Average adult dosage is 10 mg (2 tablets) 4 times daily for several days
Interaction
- Reduced gastric motility interferes with absorption of other drugs
- Effects potentiated by other antimuscarinics including amantadine, some antihistamines, phenothiazines and TCA
Contraindications
- Glaucoma
- Obstructive uropathy
- Obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract
- Intestinal atony of the elderly or debilitated patient
- Unstable cardiovascular status in acute hemorrhage
- Severe ulcerative colitis
- Toxic megacolon
- Complicating ulcerative colitis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Hypersensitivity
