Indications
- Treatment of Herpes simplex keratitis
Pharmacology
- Antiviral agent
- Highly active against Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster viruses
- Low toxicity to mammalian cells
- Phosphorylated to Acyclovir triphosphate
- Inhibits herpes-specific DNA polymerase
Dosage & Administration
- Same dosage for all age groups
- Ointment application - 10 mm ribbon inside lower conjunctival sac
- Five times a day at four hourly intervals
- Minimum 3 days of treatment after healing
Interaction
- No clinically significant interactions identified
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir or Valacyclovir
Side Effects
- Very common - Superficial punctate keratopathy
- Common - Transient mild stinging of the eye, conjunctivitis
- Rare - Blepharitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in breast milk unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not exceed recommended dosage, frequency, or treatment length
Overdose Effects
- No adverse effects if entire content of 90 mg tube is ingested orally
