Indications
- Treatment of bacterial infections like tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, scarlet fever, erysipelas, skin infections, lymphadenitis, prophylaxis of infection after dental procedures, prophylaxis of scarlet fever
Pharmacology
- Absorbed from upper part of small intestine
- Best absorbed as potassium salt
- Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
Dosage
- Adults: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children (above 1 year):
- 125-250 mg 6 hourly
- 125 mg/5 ml powder for suspension: 1-2 teaspoonful (5-10 ml) 6 hourly
- 250 mg/5 ml powder for suspension: ½-1 teaspoonful (2.5-5 ml) 6 hourly
- Infants (below 1 year):
- 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
- 125 mg/5 ml powder for suspension: ½-1 teaspoonful (2.5-5 ml) 6 hourly
Administration
- Best taken on empty stomach
- Tablets swallowed without chewing with liquid
- Syrup shaken vigorously before use
Interaction
- Concurrent intake of food reduces absorption
- Concomitant administration with penicillins may affect methotrexate levels
- Diarrhea may disturb absorption of other drugs
- Concurrent use with bacteriostatic antibiotics may attenuate penicillin activity
- Potential impact on oral contraceptives effectiveness
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or excipients
- Severe gastrointestinal disorders with vomiting and diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings
- Consider cross-allergy with cephalosporins
- Consider potassium content in patients with heart diseases or electrolyte disturbances
- Check patient's condition regularly for proliferation of resistant microorganisms
- Consider sugar content in patients with diabetes mellitus
- No impaired ability to drive or operate machinery
- Encephalopathy risk with adverse reactions
Overdose Effects
- Low toxicity with broad therapeutic range
- Risk of encephalopathy with beta-lactam antibiotics
- Phenoxymethylpenicillin can be eliminated through haemodialysis
