Indications
- Treatment of constipation
- Preparation for radiographic or endoscopic examination of the colon
Pharmacology
- Diphenolic compound
- Stimulates peristalsis
- Increases intraluminal water and electrolytes
- Initiates a response in the entire colon
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 5-10 mg at night
- Occasional increase to 15-20 mg
- Child under 10 years: 5 mg
- 10 mg orally at bed-time for 2 days before examination for adults
- Child dosage: half of the adult dose
Contraindications
- Ileus
- Intestinal obstruction
- Acute surgical abdominal conditions like acute appendicitis
- Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
- Severe dehydration
Side Effects
- Diarrhea with overuse
- Malabsorption with overuse
- Depletion of potassium with overuse
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Cautious use during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Excessive use may lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance
- Chronic use can cause dependence
