Indications

Pharmacology
- Disaccharide derivatives
- Galactose and sorbitol composition
- Unchanged in the colon
- Increase in osmotic pressure in the colon
- Increase in stool water content and volume
- Laxative effect in the lumen of the colon
- Virtually 100% bioavailable
- Minimal absorption
- Up to 2% found unchanged in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Can be mixed with hot or cold beverages, puddings, etc.
- Adjustable dosage for constipated patients and those with portal systemic encephalopathy
- Initial daily dosage for adults
- Mean dosage for children
- Effects within a few hours
- Delayed initial laxative response in some cases
- Adequate daily fluid intake advised
Interaction
- Avoid simultaneous use with antacids and neomycin in cirrhotic patients
- Potential potassium loss caused by other drugs
- Enhanced risk of toxic effects of glycosides in concomitant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any ingredients
Side Effects
- Abdominal discomfort at the start of treatment
- Diminishing discomfort with regular intake
- Occasional reports of nausea or anal pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Minimally absorbed systemically following oral administration
- Unknown fetal exposure
- Unknown presence in human or animal milk
- Unknown effects on the breastfed infant and milk production
Precautions & Warnings
- Regular monitoring of serum electrolytes for elderly or debilitated patients
- Correction of pre-existing fluid or electrolyte imbalance
- Accumulation of hydrogen in the bowel after treatment
- Thorough bowel cleansing advised before electrocauterization procedure
- Not recommended in cases of ileostomy or colostomy
- Avoid prolonged use without interruption
