Indications

  • Adjunct to diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Risk reduction of cardiovascular death in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with established cardiovascular disease

Pharmacology

Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor

Dosage & Administration

Recommended dose: 10mg once daily, can be increased to 25mg once daily

Interactions

  • Diuretics - increased urine volume
  • Insulin or Insulin Secretagogues - increased risk for hypoglycemia
  • Positive Urine Glucose Test - not recommended for monitoring glycemic control
  • Interference with 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) Assay - not recommended for monitoring glycemic control

Contraindications

Severe hypersensitivity reaction, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, dialysis

Pregnancy & Lactation

Assessment of renal function recommended prior to initiation, no initiation in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
