Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns, incisions and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation, the umbilical area or circumcision
- Abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds prevents the development of infections and permits wound healing
- The treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing by surgeons and operation theatre staff
- Preoperative preparation of patients' skin
- For disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations and abrasions
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- In oral moniliasis (thrush); bacterial and mycotic skin infections, decubitus & stasis ulcers
- As a preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- For the symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone
- Povidone Iodine is superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water for gargle & mouthwash
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite and thiomersal
- Use with concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Avoid use in severely burnt patients without assessing serum iodide levels
- Avoid use in serious cavities and in Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function with severe burns or large areas denuded of skin
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Not recommended for use during human pregnancy or lactation, except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- In case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult Registered Physician
- Special caution when applying to broken skin of patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Excess powder can be washed off readily with warm water
- Patients experiencing blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery
- Contact lenses should not be worn during instillation of the ophthalmic solution

- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
