Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation and circumcision
- Infections in oral moniliasis (thrush)
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining and active in the presence of various substances
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali and certain chemical compounds
- Concurrent lithium therapy may lead to hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or on lithium therapy
- Not recommended for children under 2 years old
Side Effects

- Skin and mucous membrane irritation
- Potential systemic adverse effects in severe burn cases
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding (consult physician)
- Avoid use in pregnant and lactating women for certain product forms
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged use and pooling beneath the patient
- Special caution for applications to broken skin in patients with renal insufficiency
- Careful use in known iodine sensitivity cases
- Avoid contact lens use during instillation of ophthalmic solution
