Indications
- Cream or ointment for primary or secondary topical infections

Pharmacology
- Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
- Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Effective against protozoa, viruses, fungi/yeasts, and spores
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice a week for prevention of infection
- Solution: Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water
- Surgical Scrub for preoperative and postoperative washing
- Powder: Apply a light dusting to the affected area
- Ophthalmic Solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to exhibit hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Avoid use in severely burnt patients without assessing serum iodide levels
- Povidone Iodine Powder should not be used in serious cavities and in Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin and mucous membranes irritation
- Possible systemic adverse effects on severe burns or large denuded areas
- Potential interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Use in pregnant and lactating women should be consulted with a Registered Physician
- Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation, except for compelling reasons (Ophthalmic Solution)
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult a Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged use and pooling of Solution beneath the patient
- Regular use should be avoided as it may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine
- Special caution is needed when regular applications are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Use directly from the container when using Powder
- Patients experiencing blurred vision after applying the eye drops should avoid driving or using machinery
