Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevent microbial contaminations in burns
- Prevent microbial contaminations in incisions and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
- Prevent microbial contaminations in the umbilical area
- Prevent microbial contaminations in circumcision
- Prevent infections and permit wound healing in abrasions
- Prevent infections and permit wound healing in minor cuts
- Prevent infections and permit wound healing in wounds
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Exerts prolonged germicidal action
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing
- For preoperative and postoperative washing by operating personnel
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- 1 drop 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali
- Exhibits interaction with sodium thiosulphate
- Exhibits interaction with sodium metabisulphite
- Exhibits interaction with thiomersal
- Exhibits hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Avoid use in patients receiving lithium therapy
- Assess serum iodide levels in severely burnt patients
- Avoid use in serious cavities
- Avoid use in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions
- May cause irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- May produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis and hypernatraemia
- May impair renal function
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Consult Registered Physician regarding use during breastfeeding
- Avoid regular use in pregnant and lactating women
- Avoid administration during pregnancy and lactation except for compelling reasons
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged exposure in preoperative prepping
- Regular use can lead to absorption of a significant amount of iodine
- Avoid use for more than 14 days
- Avoid use in children under 6 years of age
- Special caution when regular applications to broken skin are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients who experience blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery
- Contact lenses should not be worn during instillation
