Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention of contaminations in burns, incisions, and other topical lesions
- Degerming skin in hyperalimentation
- Abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds prevent infection and permit wound healing
- Treatment of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipment
- Preoperative prepping of operative site including the vagina
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Gargle & Mouthwash: Treatment of acute mucosal infections
- Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
Dosage and Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for maximum 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention
- Apply full strength as often as needed
- Adults and children over 6 years: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required into the conjunctival sac
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and povidone
- Superior to ordinary elemental iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali
- Shows hypothyroidic effect
- Use with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders
- Severely burnt patients with possible hepatic and renal impairment
- Not for use in serious cavities and in children under 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects on severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding
- No experience regarding the safety of the Povidone eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution on deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause irritation or severe skin reactions
- Special caution on applications to broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Contact lenses should not be worn during the instillation of the ophthalmic solution
- Blurred vision may occur after application of eye drops
Storage Conditions
- Store below 25°C
- Do not freeze
- Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
- Do not use it after one month of the first opening
