Indications
- Adjunct to systemic therapy for primary or secondary topical infections
- Treatment of infected surgical incisions
- Treatment of infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Treatment of pyodermas
- Treatment of secondarily infected dermatoses
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns, incisions, and other topical lesions
- Treatment of seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing of hospital operating room and equipment
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush); bacterial and mycotic skin infections
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during, and after dental and oral surgery
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine by liberating elemental iodine slowly
- Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days for the treatment of infection
- Apply once or twice a week for the prevention of infection
- Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing, repeat up to four times daily for up to 14 consecutive days
- Wet hands and forearms with water, apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub and spread over both hands and forearms, scrub thoroughly for about five minutes
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Concurrent lithium therapy may lead to hypothyroidic effect
Contraindications
- Causes hypersensitivity reactions
- Avoid regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or those receiving lithium therapy
- Not for use in serious cavities and in children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- May cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Application to severe burns or large denuded areas may produce systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, and impairment of renal function
- May interfere with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to possible absorption affecting the fetal thyroid
- Considered usually compatible with breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics
Precautions & Warnings
- In case of deep or puncture wounds or serious burns, consult Registered Physician
- Avoid prolonged use as it may lead to the absorption of a significant amount of iodine
- Special caution is needed when regular applications are made to patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Care must be taken when used on known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery

- Keep out of the reach of children
- Do not touch the ophthalmic solution dropper tip to any surface
