Indications
- Primary or secondary topical infections

- Oral moniliasis (thrush) treatment
- Preoperative swab in the mouth & throat
- Treatment of acute mucosal infections of the mouth and pharynx
- Oral hygiene prior to, during and after dental and oral surgery
- Antiseptic skin cleanser for preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
- Topical application for superficial wounds, minor cuts, burns, abrasions, lacerations
- Symptomatic treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer, povidone, with superior germicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi/yeasts, and spores. It is non-staining and active in the presence of various substances.
Dosage & Administration
- Cream or ointment: Apply once or twice daily for up to 14 days for treatment, Apply once or twice a week for prevention, Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed, Gargle & Mouthwash: Use undiluted or diluted with warm water, Surgical Scrub: Wet hands and forearms, apply, scrub thoroughly, rinse, Powder: Apply a light dusting, Ophthalmic Solution: 1 drop 4 times daily or as required
Interaction
Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, thiomersal, and concurrent lithium therapy.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Thyroid disorders
- Patients on lithium therapy
- Severely burnt patients
- Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Skin and mucous membrane irritation
- Systemic adverse effects with severe burns or large denuded areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy, usually compatible with breastfeeding, and not advised in pregnant and lactating women for Gargle & Mouthwash and Surgical Scrub. Administration during pregnancy and lactation not recommended for Povidone eye drops.
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep wounds or serious burns
- Avoid prolonged exposure in preoperative prepping
- Avoid prolonged use in Gargle & Mouthwash
- Special caution for broken skin and renal insufficiency in Surgical Scrub
- Careful use on known iodine sensitivity in Powder
- Avoid driving or using machinery if experience blurred vision after Ophthalmic Solution
- Store below 25°C, protect from light, and keep out of the reach of children
