- Hyperosmolar laxative
- Non-absorbable disaccharide
- Promotes soft stool
- Accelerates bowel motion
Pharmacology
- Synthetic disaccharide
- Metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria
- Produces low molecular weight organic acids
- Lowers pH of colon contents
- Promotes retention of water by osmotic effect
- Increases peristaltic activity
- Minimally absorbed
