Description
Conlax is a hyperosmolar laxative used for the treatment of constipation. It is a non-absorbable disaccharide that draws water into the bowel, causing distention and promoting soft stool and bowel motion.

Pharmacology
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria, promoting water retention and increasing peristaltic activity. It is minimally absorbed, with pharmacokinetics not relevant to the principal therapeutic action.

- Constipation-Chronic:
- Adults:
- 3-6 teaspoons initially
- 1.5-6 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Children up to 14 years:
- 3 teaspoons initially
- 1-2 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Infants and toddlers:
- 1-2 teaspoons initially
- 1 teaspoon daily in long-term therapy
- Adults:

Interaction
No significant drug interactions with Conlax. Potassium deficiency can intensify the glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose and/or lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction

Administer with care to patients intolerant to Conlax. Higher doses may be needed for the treatment of (pre)coma hepaticum, which should be considered for diabetics.
