Indications
- Treatment of essential (primary) hypertension
- Treatment of secondary hypertension
- Treatment of left ventricular failure
- Treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon and Raynaud's disease
- Adjunct in the symptomatic treatment of urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia
Pharmacology
- Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
- Selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors
- Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
- Reduction in cardiac impedance
- Augmentation of cardiac output
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapy with a low starting dose
- Daily dosage adjustment based on patient's response
- Recommended starting dosage for left ventricular failure
- Recommended starting dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and Raynaud's disease
- Recommended starting dosage for benign prostatic hyperplasia
Interaction
- No adverse drug interactions reported
- Compatible with cardiac glycosides, hypoglycemic agents, tranquilizers, sedatives, antiarrhythmic agents, and analgesic/anti-inflammatory agents
Contraindications
- Known sensitivity to quinazolines

Precautions & Warnings
- Postural hypotension
- Avoid situations where injury could result from dizziness or weakness
- Careful adjustment of diuretic dosage in left ventricular failure patients
- Careful monitoring of blood pressure during administration in Raynaud's phenomenon, Raynaud's disease, and benign prostatic hyperplasia
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- Not recommended in left ventricular failure due to mechanical obstruction
- Adequate data not available for left ventricular failure due to recent myocardial infarction
Overdose Effects
- Profound drowsiness and depressed reflexes
- Support of the cardiovascular system is of first importance
- Renal function should be monitored and supported as needed
