Description

Hyperosmolar laxative used for constipation treatment

Pharmacology

Metabolized by saccharolytic bacteria, lowers colon pH, increases peristaltic activity

DosageAndAdministration

  • Constipation:
    • Adults: 3-6 teaspoons daily; long-term therapy 1½-6 teaspoons daily
    • Children (up to 14 years): 3 teaspoons daily; long-term therapy 1-2 teaspoons daily
    • Infants and toddlers: 1-2 teaspoons daily; long-term therapy 1 teaspoon daily
  • DamagedIntestinalFlora:
    • Adults: 1-2 teaspoons daily
    • Children: 1 teaspoon daily
  • BloodAmmoniaLevelReduction:
    • Hepatopathy: 18-30 teaspoons daily
    • PortalEncephalopathy: Hourly doses of 6-9 teaspoons to induce rapid laxation
