Description
A hyperosmolar laxative used for effective treatment of constipation. Non-absorbable disaccharide draws water into the bowel, promotes soft stool, and accelerates bowel motion.
Pharmacology
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria, producing low molecular weight organic acids, lowering pH, and retaining water by an osmotic effect.
Dosage & Administration
- Constipation:
- Adults:
- 3-6 teaspoons daily initially
- 1½-6 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Children (up to 14 years):
- 3 teaspoons daily initially
- 1-2 teaspoons daily in long-term therapy
- Infants and toddlers:
- 1-2 teaspoons daily initially
- 1 teaspoon daily in long-term therapy
- Adults:
- Damaged Intestinal Flora:
- Adults:
- 1-2 teaspoons daily
- Children:
- 1 teaspoon daily
- Adults:
- Reduction of Blood Ammonia Level:
- Hyper-ammoniemia in Hepatopathy: Maximum 18-30 teaspoons daily
- Portal Systemic Encephalopathy: Hourly doses of 6-9 teaspoons may be used
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions; glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides intensified by potassium deficiency
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction
Side Effects
- Flatulence
- Cramps
- Abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhoea in overdose
- Loss of electrolytes, primarily potassium in abuse
Pregnancy & Lactation
US FDA Pregnancy Category B. No adverse effects observed, decision to use during pregnancy and lactation by registered physician.
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with care to intolerant patients
- Higher dose consideration for (pre)coma hepaticum in diabetics
Overdose Effects
No reports of accidental overdosage. Expected symptoms include diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
