Description
- Laxolac is a hyperosmolar laxative used to treat constipation by promoting soft stool and accelerating bowel motion.
- Non-absorbable disaccharide which draws water into the bowel, causing distention through fluid accumulation.
Indications
- Chronic constipation treatment
- Diet rich in fiber, liquids, and physical exercise as initial treatment
- Intestinal flora disturbances
- Increased blood ammonia levels in hepatopathy
Pharmacology
- Synthetic disaccharide
- Metabolized by saccharolytic bacteria in the colon
- Produces low molecular weight organic acids
- Lowers pH of colon contents
- Promotes water retention through osmotic effect
- Increases peristaltic activity
- Minimally absorbed
Dosage & Administration
- 3-6 teaspoons daily for adults with chronic constipation
- 1.5-6 teaspoons daily for long-term therapy in adults
- 3 teaspoons daily for children up to 14 years
- 1-2 teaspoons daily for long-term therapy in children
- 1-2 teaspoons daily for adults with damaged intestinal flora
- 1 teaspoon daily for children with damaged intestinal flora
- Maximum of 18-30 teaspoons daily for hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy
- Hourly doses of 6-9 teaspoons for portal systemic encephalopathy
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose and/or lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction
Side Effects
- Occasional flatulence, cramp, and abdominal discomfort
- Overdose can result in diarrhea and loss of electrolytes (primarily potassium)
