Description

  • A hyperosmolar laxative used for constipation, non-absorbable disaccharide that draws water into the bowel, promotes soft stool and accelerates bowel motion

Indications

  • Treatment of chronic constipation
  • Intestinal flora disturbances
  • Increased blood ammonia levels

DosageAndAdministration

  • Adult dosage: 3-6 teaspoons daily initially, 1½-6 teaspoons daily for long-term therapy
  • Children dosage: 3 teaspoons daily initially, 1-2 teaspoons daily for long-term therapy
  • Infants and toddlers dosage: 1-2 teaspoons daily initially, 1 teaspoon daily for long-term therapy

Interaction

  • No significant drug interactions reported
  • Glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides may be intensified by potassium deficiency

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to galactose and lactose
  • Galactose-free diet
  • Gastro-cardial symptom complex
  • Suspected intestinal obstruction
