Description

  • A synthetic sugar used to treat constipation and reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver disease.

Indications

  • Treatment of chronic constipation

Pharmacology

  • Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria, producing low molecular weight organic acids which lower the pH of the colon contents, promote the retention of water by an osmotic effect, and increase peristaltic activity.

Dosage and administration

  • Adult dosage: 3-6 teaspoons daily for chronic constipation, 1-2 teaspoons daily for damaged intestinal flora, maximum of 18-30 teaspoons daily for hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy
  • Children dosage: Initially 3 teaspoons daily for chronic constipation, 1 teaspoon daily for damaged intestinal flora

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to galactose and lactose
  • Galactose-free diet
  • Gastro-cardial symptom complex
  • Suspected intestinal obstruction

  • Loss of electrolytes (primarily potassium) in overdose

  • Higher dosage may be needed for (pre)coma hepaticum
