Description
P Lac is a hyperosmolar laxative used for the effective treatment of constipation. It is a non-absorbable disaccharide that draws water into the bowel, causing distention through fluid accumulation, promoting soft stool, and accelerating bowel motion.
Indications
- Constipation (Chronic Constipation)
- Intestinal flora disturbances
- Increased blood ammonia levels (hyper ammoniemia in hepatopathy, portal-systemic encephalopathy)
Pharmacology
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria, producing organic acids, lowering the pH of colon contents, promoting water retention by an osmotic effect, and increasing peristaltic activity. It is minimally absorbed.
DosageAndAdministration
- Constipation:
- Adults: Initially 3-6 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1½-6 teaspoons daily
- Children up to 14 years: Initially 3 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1-2 teaspoons daily
- Infants and toddlers: Initially 1-2 teaspoons daily, long-term therapy 1 teaspoon daily

- Hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy: Up to 18-30 teaspoons daily

Interaction
No significant drug interactions with P Lac. Potassium deficiency may intensify the glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose, galactose-free diet, gastro-cardial symptom complex, suspected intestinal obstruction
