Description
Xorel Gastro-resistant tablets are used for the treatment of active duodenal ulcer, active benign gastric ulcer, symptomatic erosive or ulcerative gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease Long-term Management (GERD Maintenance), symptomatic treatment of moderate to very severe gastro-esophageal reflux disease (symptomatic GERD), Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, in combination with appropriate antibacterial therapeutic regimens for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with peptic ulcer disease.
Dosage recommendation
- 20 mg for active duodenal ulcer and active benign gastric ulcer once daily in the morning
- 20 mg for erosive or ulcerative GERD once daily for four to eight weeks
- 10 mg for symptomatic treatment of moderate to very severe GERD once daily
- 60-120 mg for Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome once daily or in divided doses
- 20 mg rabeprazole sodium twice daily for H. pylori eradication
Administration instructions
Take in the morning before eating, do not chew or crush, swallow whole
Pharmacology
Suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the gastric H+/K+-ATPase at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell
Interaction
- May interact with compounds whose absorption is pH dependent
- Co-administration with ketoconazole or itraconazole may decrease antifungal plasma levels
- No interaction with liquid antacids observed
- Not recommended for co-administration with atazanavir

- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Contraindicated in pregnancy and during breastfeeding

- May increase risk of hip, wrist, and spine fracture especially in elderly or with other risk factors
- Risk of cross-hypersensitivity reactions with other proton pump inhibitors
- May increase overall risk of fracture by 10–40%
- Risk of gastrointestinal infections such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, and C. difficile
- Hypomagnesaemia reported after three months of treatment, periodic magnesium level monitoring recommended
- May reduce absorption of vitamin B12
- Associated with very infrequent cases of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus
- Increased Chromogranin A level may interfere with investigations for neuroendocrine tumors
