Indications

Description
- Hyperosmolar laxative
- Effective treatment for constipation
- Non-absorbable disaccharide
- Promotes soft stool and accelerates bowel motion
Pharmacology
- Synthetic disaccharide
- Metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria
- Produces low molecular weight organic acids
- Lowers pH of colon contents
- Promotes retention of water by osmotic effect
- Increases peristaltic activity
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 3-6 teaspoons daily (initially) and 1.5-6 teaspoons daily (long-term)
- Children dosage: 3 teaspoons daily (initially) and 1-2 teaspoons daily (long-term)
- Infant and toddler dosage: 1-2 teaspoons daily (initially) and 1 teaspoon daily (long-term)
- Dosage for damaged intestinal flora: 1-2 teaspoons daily for adults and 1 teaspoon daily for children
- Max dosage for hyper-ammoniemia in hepatopathy: 18-30 teaspoons daily
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions
- Glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides can be intensified by potassium deficiency
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose
- Galactose-free diet
- Gastro-cardial symptom complex
- Suspected intestinal obstruction
Side Effects
- Occasional flatulence, cramp, and abdominal discomfort
- Rapidly eliminated by reducing the dose
- Overdose can result in diarrhea
- Loss of electrolytes, primarily potassium in abuse

Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with care to patients intolerant to Sinalac
