Pharmacology
- Competitive blocking of histamine at H2-receptors
- Inhibition of gastric acid secretion
- No effect on pepsin secretion, pentagastrin-stimulated intrinsic factor secretion, or serum gastrin
Dosage and Administration
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- 300 mg as a single daily dose for duodenal and gastric ulcer
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for reflux esophagitis
- 300 mg tablet at bedtime for reflux esophagitis
- 150 mg tablet 3 times daily for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- 150 mg tablet twice daily for episodic dyspepsia
- 300 mg tablet at bedtime for episodic dyspepsia
- 150 mg tablet for maintenance to prevent recurrences
- 2-4 mg/kg tablet twice daily for children with peptic ulcer
- 50 mg slow IV injection every 6-8 hours for haemorrhage from stress ulceration
- 25 mg per hour IV infusion for haemorrhage from stress ulceration
- 50 mg intramuscular injection every 6-8 hours for haemorrhage from stress ulceration
Interaction
- Delayed absorption and increased peak serum concentration with propantheline bromide
- Minimal inhibition of hepatic metabolism of certain drugs
- Potential alteration of absorption of pH-dependent drugs
- Reduced bioavailability with antacids

- Hypersensitivity to Ranidin

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use in Special Populations
- Similar ulcer healing rates in elderly patients as in younger patients
