Indications
- Treats relief of occasional constipation
- Used for bowel cleansing regimen in preparing the patient for surgery
- Prepares the colon for X-Ray or endoscopic examination
Pharmacology
- Sodium phosphate management of hypophosphataemia
- Acts as a mild osmotic laxative when given orally as dilute solutions
- Phosphate enemas or concentrated oral solutions for bowel cleansing before surgery or endoscopy procedures
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children 5 years of age & over
- Dosage for bowel preparation in adults and children
- Dosage for occasional constipation in adults and children
Interaction
- Use with caution in patients taking specific medications affecting electrolyte levels
- Concurrent administration of polyethylene glycol bowel cleansing preparations and this solution may be dangerous and is not recommended
Contraindications
- Congestive heart failure
- Renal failure or clinically significant impaired renal function
- Bowel/GI obstructions
- Active inflammatory bowel disease
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting
- Nervous system side effects like dizziness, headache, and seizures
- Renal side effects including renal impairment, increased BUN, and acute renal failure
- Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, rash, and bronchospasm
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use not recommended in pregnant women unless the probable clinical benefit outweighs the possible risk
- Use not recommended in nursing mothers unless the probable clinical benefit outweighs the possible risk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with extreme caution in the elderly, frail or debilitated
- Additional fluids by mouth for patients on a low salt diet
- Monitoring of electrolytes and intravenous fluids for patients undergoing major bowel procedures
- Caution advised in patients taking diuretics and medicines known to prolong the QT interval
- Advised not to use when nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain are present
Use in Special Populations
- Not to be taken by children under 5 years of age
- Adjustment of insulin or oral anti-diabetic medication may be necessary for diabetic patients
