Indications
- Treatment of acute and chronic psychoses

Pharmacology
- Selective monoaminergic antagonist
- High affinity for serotoninergic 5-HT2 and dopaminergic D2 receptors
- Binds to alpha1 adrenergic receptors
- Binds with lower affinity to H1 histamine and alpha2 adrenergic receptors
- No affinity for cholinergic receptors
- Potent D2 antagonist
- Improvement of positive symptoms of schizophrenia
- Reduction in extrapyramidal side effect liability
- Therapeutic activity on negative and affective symptoms of schizophrenia
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 2 mg in 1-2 divided doses on the first day
- Subsequent dose of 4 mg in 1-2 divided doses on the second day
- Usual dose range of 4-6 mg daily
- Maximum dose of 16 mg daily
- Specific dosage for elderly patients
- Dosage for manic episodes
- Specific dosage for schizophrenia
Interaction
- Antagonizes the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Reduction in plasma clearance with chronic administration of Carbamazepine
- Decrease in clearance with chronic administration of Clozapine
- Enhancement of effects of certain antihypertensives
