Indications
- Treatment of dry mouth from salivary gland dysfunction caused by radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck
- Treatment of dry mouth in patients with Sjogren's syndrome
Pharmacology
- Cholinergic agonist
- Muscarinic action
- Increases secretion by exocrine glands
- Impacts urinary tract tone and motility
- Enhances smooth muscle tone and motility
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose: one tablet taken three times a day
- Maximum daily dose: 30 mg daily
- Recommended dose for Sjogren’s syndrome: one tablet (5 mg) four times a day
- Tablet should be taken with a glass of water during or directly after meals
- Dosage adjustments for hepatic impairment
Interaction
- Caution with beta adrenergic antagonists
- Antagonizes anticholinergic effects of concomitant drugs
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled asthma
- Cardiovascular disease
- Known hypersensitivity to pilocarpine
- Miosis undesirable conditions (e.g., acute iritis, narrow-angle glaucoma)

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with cholelithiasis or biliary tract disease
- Excessive sweating and liquid intake while taking Pilogen
Use in Special Populations
- Pregnancy Category C
- Lack of adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use in nursing mothers
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
