Description

Rozavas 5 mg Tablet is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor drug used to lower cholesterol levels and triglycerides in the body.

Indications

  • Primary hyperlipidemia
  • Mixed dyslipidemia
  • Hypertriglyceredemia
  • Dysbetalipoproteinemia
  • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Slowing the progression of atherosclerosis
  • Risk reduction of Myocardial Infarction (MI)
  • Stroke risk reduction
  • Arterial revascularization procedures risk reduction

Pharmacology

Rosuvastatin is a selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which converts 3-hydroxy-3-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A to mevalonate, a precursor of cholesterol.

Dosage and administration

  • Usual dose range of 5-20 mg/day
  • Maximum recommended dose of 20 mg/day
  • Dosing adjustments at intervals of 4 weeks or more
  • 40 mg once daily for very high cholesterol and high risk of MI or stroke
  • Initiation with 5 mg once daily for Asian patients
  • Limiting dose to 5 mg once daily with Cyclosporine
  • Hemodialysis indication for severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases exposure with Cyclosporine
  • Avoid combination with Gemfibrozil
  • Increases exposure with Lopinavir/Ritonavir or Atazanavir/Ritonavir
  • Combination prolongs INR with coumarin anticoagulants

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to product components
  • Liver disease
  • Pregnant women and women who may become pregnant
  • Nursing mothers

  • Headache

  • Constipation
  • Asthenia
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea

Pregnancy and lactation

Administration to women of childbearing age only when unlikely to conceive, with immediate discontinuation upon pregnancy

Precautions and warnings

  • Prescribed with caution in patients with predisposing factors for myopathy
  • Discontinuation upon markedly elevated creatinine kinase levels or myopathy diagnosis or suspicion
  • Temporary withholding upon acute, serious conditions suggestive of myopathy
  • Liver enzyme tests before and at 12 weeks following initiation of therapy and any dosage elevation
