Indications
- Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Reducing bronchoconstriction and vascular permeability
- Inhibition of mast cell degranulation
- Inhibition of cytokine release
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents: 10 mg once a day
- Recommended dosages for children aged 2 to 11 years, based on weight
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure when co-administered with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution with concomitant use of statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Avoid concomitant use with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: increased appetite, arthralgia, back pain, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat, epistaxis, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, increased risk of infection, irritability, malaise, myalgia, nasal dryness, nausea, oropharyngeal pain, rash, thirst, vomiting, weight increase
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks
- Not recommended during lactation unless benefits justify risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with prolonged QT interval, uncorrected hypokalemia, or proarrhythmic conditions
- Caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in elderly, no dose adjustment required
- Not established for patients <12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- The most common adverse reaction is somnolence
