Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of mast cell degranulation
- Inhibition of cytokine release
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and adolescents: 10 mg once a day
- Can be taken with or without food
- Different dosage for children based on weight
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure with concomitant administration of ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution with co-administration with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Avoid concomitant use with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: increased appetite, arthralgia, back pain
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefit outweighs risk
- Not recommended during lactation unless benefits justify risk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years old
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and necessary supportive measures for overdose
