Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting, non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells
- Inhibits release of cytokines
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 10 mg once a day for adults and adolescents
- Dose for children aged 2 to 11 years based on weight
- May be taken with or without food
Interaction
- Increased systemic exposure with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- Caution with concomitant use of statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Avoid concomitant use with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common: Asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: Appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, diarrhea, cough
- Rare: Palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks
- Not recommended during lactation unless benefits justify risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Use with caution in elderly, no dose adjustment required
- Safety and efficacy not established in children below 12 years
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and supportive measures in case of accidental ingestion of very high doses
