Pharmacology

Sertraline inhibits CNS neuronal reuptake of 5-HT, increasing 5-HT concentrations, leading to improved depression.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults:
    • Major depressive disorder:
      • Starting Dose: 50 mg
      • Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Obsessive-compulsive disorder:
      • Starting Dose: 50 mg
      • Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Panic disorder:
      • Starting Dose: 25 mg
      • Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder:
      • Starting Dose: 25 mg
      • Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Social anxiety disorder:
      • Starting Dose: 25 mg
      • Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Pediatric Patients (ages 6-12 years old): Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Starting Dose: 25 mg, Therapeutic Range: 50-200 mg
    • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): Starting dosage for PMDD is 50 mg/day, may be administered continuously or intermittently

Interaction

Potential interaction with drugs highly bound to plasma proteins, such as warfarin, digitoxin. Also interacts with drugs like Cimetidine, Diazepam, Hypoglycemic drugs, Atenolol, etc.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Sertraline or any excipients. Not recommended in moderate to severe hepatic impairment

  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness
  • Caution in activities requiring alertness
  • Elderly may be more sensitive to the effects
  • Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitor
  • Risk of suicidal thinking and change of behavior
