Description

Reduces cholesterol saturation of bile and promotes dissolution of gallstones. Reduces cholesterol secretion into bile and increases bile acid secretion rate without a reduction in phospholipids.

  • Absorption: Completely absorbed in the upper intestine, with a 60-80% absorption rate. Time to peak serum concentration varies from 30 to 150 minutes. Biologic half-life ranges from 3.5-5.8 days.

Interaction

Avoid concomitant administration with drugs that increase bile cholesterol or bile-acid binding drugs, as it may reduce the effectiveness of therapy.

Contraindications

  • Non-functioning gall-bladder
  • Calcified and pigmented gallstones
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
