Description
Silver sulfadiazine cream indicated for prophylaxis against bacterial colonization and infection in burn wounds, and management of contaminated or infection-prone wounds. It has antibacterial and bacteriostatic action against sensitive organisms.

Recommended usage
Once to twice daily, applied to a thickness of approximately 1/16 inches or 1.5 mm
Application method
Apply directly to the burn wound, and keep the burn areas covered with the cream at all times
Additional usage information
Reapply to any areas from which it has been removed by patient activity, and ensure reapplication immediately after hydrotherapy
Recommended duration of use
Until satisfactory healing or until the burn site is ready for grafting
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine or any other ingredients
- Pregnant women approaching or at term
- Premature or newborn infants in the first 2 months of life
Side effects
- Transient leukopenia
- Skin necrosis
- Erythema multiform
- Skin discoloration
- Burning sensation
- Rashes
- Interstitial nephritis
Precautions
- Monitor hepatic and renal functions if impaired
- Consider possible inactivation of proteolytic enzymes by silver
- Monitor serum sulfa concentrations in extensive burn wounds
- Monitor renal function and urine for sulfa crystals
Pharmacology
Antibacterial action by structural changes in bacterial cell membranes, silver dissociation, and binding to bacterial cells and DNA. Sulfadiazine moiety provides bacteriostatic action against sensitive organisms. Up to 10% of sulfadiazine may be absorbed in adults
Interaction
- Inactivation of enzymatic debriding agents
- Potentiation of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin
- Possible increase in leukopenia incidence with cimetidine co-administration
Pregnancy lactation
- Category: Pregnancy Category B
- Usage caution: Use during pregnancy only if clearly justified, especially in pregnant women approaching or at term. Excretion in human milk is unknown. Decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or the drug, considering its importance to the mother
- Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
