Indications

Pharmacology
- Antibacterial action mechanism not fully elucidated
- Structural changes in bacterial cell membrane
- Weakening of cell wall membrane
- Reduced viability in sensitive strains
- Silver moiety binding to bacterial cells
- Prevention of bacterial cell proliferation
- Sulfadiazine moiety provides bacteriostatic action
- Approximately 10% absorption in adults
- 60-85% absorbed amount excreted in urine
- 31.8 mg/L urinary sulfadiazine concentration in children with 13% body surface area burns
Dosage & Administration
- Cleansing of burn wounds before application
- Application of Silver Sulfadiazine over burn wound
- Covering burn areas with Silver Sulfadiazine at all times
- Application once to twice daily with specified thickness
- Reapplication to removed areas
- Use of dressings if necessary
- Reapplication after hydrotherapy
- Continued treatment until satisfactory healing or grafting readiness
- No withdrawal from therapeutic regimen in case of infection possibility
Interaction
- Inactivation of enzymatic debriding agents
- Potentiation of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin
- Increased incidence of leukopenia with cimetidine co-administration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ingredients
- Pregnant women approaching or at term
- Premature infants
- Newborn infants during the first 2 months of life
