Description
- Used in the management of heart failure
- Indicated in atrial fibrillation with an uncontrolled ventricular rate
- Treatment for acute/left ventricular failure
- Suitable for chronic/left ventricular failure and congestive heart failure especially caused by hypertensive valvular disease or ischemic heart disease

Pharmacology
- Positive inotropic activity
- Reduction in conductivity of the heart
- Direct action on vascular smooth muscle
- Indirect effects mediated primarily by the autonomic nervous system
- Increase in vagal activity
Dosage & Administration
- Rapid digitalization: 1-1.5 mg in divided doses over 24 hours
- Less urgent digitalization: 250-500 micrograms daily
- Maintenance: 62.5-500 micrograms daily
- Usual range: 125-250 micrograms daily
- Appropriate dose for the elderly
