Blocid (500 mg+100 mg)/5 ml (Oral Suspension)

Indications

• Treatment of symptoms resulting from the reflux of acid, bile, and pepsin into the esophagus
• Relief of acid regurgitation
• Management of heartburn and indigestion
• Use after gastric surgery or due to hiatus hernia
• During pregnancy to alleviate reflux symptoms
• Treatment of symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux
• Relief of hoarseness, sore throats, and cough

Pharmacology

• Combination of Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate
• Physical mode of action
• Formation of a gel in the stomach
• Generation of carbon dioxide bubbles to form a raft
• Prevention of acid flow back into the esophagus
• Raft lasts up to 4 hours
• Excretion in feces

Dosage & Administration

• Tablet and suspension forms
• Different dosage for adults, children over 12 years, and 6-12 years
• Specific dosage for children 2-12 years
• Not recommended for children under 2 years of age
• No dose modifications for elderly or hepatic impairment
• Caution in case of renal insufficiency with highly restricted salt diet

Interaction

• Consider 2-hour time interval between intake and other medicinal products
• Especially with tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates, and estramustine

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate

Side Effects

• Possible nausea, constipation, diarrhea, or headache
• Consult physician in case of adverse effects
• Possibility of sensation of swelling with excessive dosage

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use during pregnancy if clinically needed
• No known effect on breast-fed infants
• Safe for use during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Prescribe with caution in renal impairment and congestive cardiac failure
• Care needed for patients with hypercalcemia and nephrocalcinosis
• Review clinical situation if no improvement after seven days
