Indications
- Treatment of acute cyanide poisoning
- Use with caution if diagnosis is uncertain
Pharmacology
- Sodium thiosulfate acts as an antidote in the treatment of cyanide poisoning
- Acts as a sulphur-donating substrate for the enzyme rhodanese
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 12.5g of sodium thiosulfate given over 10 min
- Child dosage: 400 mg/kg of sodium thiosulfate given after 4-10 mg/kg of sodium nitrite
- Repeat doses may be administered if symptoms recur

- No formal drug interaction studies conducted

- Osmotic disturbances
- Catharsis at high doses
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Unknown excretion in human milk
- Caution advised for breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- May contain trace impurities of sodium sulfite
- Administration not deterred by presence of sulfites in emergency situations
Use in Special Populations
- Limited safety or efficacy data in pediatric patients
- Greater risk of adverse reactions in patients with impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Limited information about effects of large doses in humans
- Oral administration resulted in reductions in arterial oxygen saturation
- Intravenous administration reportedly did not change oxygen saturations
