Description
Sodival CR Vaiproate is indicated for the treatment of all types of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, prophylaxis of migraine, and febrile convulsion. It is also used for the prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy. The active ingredient, Sodium Valproate, is available in different forms including tablets, syrup, controlled release tablets, and injectable solution.

- Enteric-coated tablet containing Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg
- Syrup containing Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg
- Enteric-coated controlled release tablet with different strengths
- Injectable solution containing Sodium Valproate BP eqv. to Valproic Acid 500 mg
- Mode of Action: Exerts anti-epileptic effects by potentially increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
- Dosage & Administration:
- Oral:
- Adult: Initially 600 mg daily, increasing by 200 mg/day, maximum of 2.5 g daily
- Children:
- Over 20 kg: Initially 400 mg daily, maximum 35 mg/kg daily
- Up to 20 kg: Initially 20 mg/kg daily
- Prophylaxis of febrile convulsion: 20-30 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses
- Bipolar Disorder: Initially 600 mg daily, maintenance dosage 1000-2000 mg daily
- Prophylaxis of migraine: 400-600 mg daily, some may require 1000-1500 mg daily
- Injection:
- Adults: 400-800 mg initially, up to a maximum of 2500 mg/day
- Children: Initial 20-30 mg/kg/day, maximum 40 mg/kg/day
- Oral:
- Interaction: Acts as a non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism, known to interact significantly with drugs like Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin
- Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential

- Others:
- Rash
- Alopecia
- Stimulation of appetite
- Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma observed in up to 40% of patients, rarely fulminate hepatitis
- Special Risk Group:
- Children below 2 years of age with other medical conditions
- Those being treated with multiple antiepileptic agents
- Common:
- Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Associated with neural tube defects in newborn, excreted in breast milk
- Lactation: Probably causes no risk to the child
- Precautions & Warnings:
- Liver Functions: Should be monitored before and during the first 6 months
- Bleeding: No undue potential for bleeding before starting and major surgery
- Special Care:
- Renal impairment
- Pregnancy
- Breast-feeding
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Urinalysis: Partially eliminated in urine as a ketone metabolite, may lead to a false interpretation of the urine ketone test
- Withdrawal: Sudden withdrawal of therapy should be avoided
- Therapeutic Class: Primary anti-epileptic drugs
- Storage Conditions: Do not store above 30°C, keep away from light and out of the reach of children
