Indications

Composition

  • Sodium Valproate tablet contains 200mg
  • Sodium Valproate syrup contains 200mg/5ml
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 200 tablet contains 133.2mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 58mg of Valproic acid BP
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 300 tablet contains 199.8mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 87mg of Valproic acid BP
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release 500 tablet contains 333mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 145mg of Valproic acid BP
  • Sodium Valproate injection contains 500mg of Valproic Acid per 5 ml

Pharmacology

  • Endowed with anti-epileptic activity
  • Mechanism may involve increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Interaction

  • Inhibitor of drug metabolism
  • Significant interaction with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin, etc.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential

Side Effects

  • Common: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
  • Effects on CNS: sedation, ataxia, tremor
  • Rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
  • Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma
  • Symptoms usually respond to dose decrease
  • Hepatic injury and acute pancreatitis in children below 2 years
  • Hepatic injury and hyperammonemia in children on multiple antiepileptic agents

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses the placenta
  • First trimester exposure associated with neural tube defects
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • Consideration for pregnant and breastfeeding women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Monitor liver functions before and during therapy
  • Check for bleeding potential before major surgery
  • Consider renal impairment, pregnancy, and breast-feeding
  • Sudden withdrawal should be avoided
