Indications

- Sodium Valproate syrup contains 200mg/5ml
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 200 tablet contains 133.2mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 58mg of Valproic acid BP
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 300 tablet contains 199.8mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 87mg of Valproic acid BP
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 500 tablet contains 333mg of Sodium Valproate BP and 145mg of Valproic acid BP
- Sodium Valproate injection contains 500mg of Valproic Acid per 5 ml
Pharmacology
- Endowed with anti-epileptic activity
- Mechanism may involve increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Interaction
- Inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interaction with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin, etc.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
- Effects on CNS: sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma
- Symptoms usually respond to dose decrease
- Hepatic injury and acute pancreatitis in children below 2 years
- Hepatic injury and hyperammonemia in children on multiple antiepileptic agents
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- First trimester exposure associated with neural tube defects
- Excreted in breast milk
- Consideration for pregnant and breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor liver functions before and during therapy
- Check for bleeding potential before major surgery
- Consider renal impairment, pregnancy, and breast-feeding
- Sudden withdrawal should be avoided
