Indications

Mode of Action

  • Anti-epileptic activity against a variety of seizures
  • Increases brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration
  • Syrup given in divided doses
  • Tablets may be given once or twice daily
  • Injection for adults and children
  • Dosing based on body weight
  • Slow intravenous injection over 3-5 minutes
  • Continuous or repeated infusion

Interaction

  • Non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
  • Significant interaction with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Restricted use during pregnancy
  • Restricted use in women of childbearing potential

  • Partial elimination in the urine as a ketone metabolite
