Composition
- Sodium Valproate tablet contains 200 mg
- Sodium Valproate syrup contains 200 mg/5 ml
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 200 tablet contains 200 mg (133.2 mg Sodium Valproate BP + 58 mg Valproic acid BP)
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 300 tablet contains 300 mg (199.8 mg Sodium Valproate BP + 87 mg Valproic acid BP)
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 500 tablet contains 500 mg (333 mg Sodium Valproate BP + 145 mg Valproic acid BP)
- Sodium Valproate injection contains 500 mg in 5 ml
Pharmacology
- Anti-epileptic activity against a variety of seizures
- Increase in brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for epilepsy in adults, children over 20 kg, and children up to 20 kg
- Dosage for febrile convulsion, bipolar disorder, and prophylaxis of migraine
- Injectable administration for adults and children
Interaction
- Non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interactions with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common: anorexia, nausea, vomiting
- CNS effects: sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Other occasional effects: rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Hepatic effects: elevation of liver enzymes, fulminate hepatitis
- Special risks for children below 2 years and those on multiple antiepileptic agents
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta, associated with neural tube defects
- Excreted in breast milk, little risk to the child
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of liver functions before and during therapy
- Ensuring no undue potential for bleeding before major surgery
- Care in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, systemic lupus erythematosus
- Partial elimination in urine as a ketone metabolite, leading to false urine ketone test interpretation
- Avoidance of sudden withdrawal of therapy
