Indications

Composition

  • Sodium Valproate tablet contains 200 mg BP
  • Sodium Valproate syrup contains 200 mg BP in 5 ml
  • Sodium Valproate controlled release tablets in 200mg, 300mg, and 500mg
  • Sodium Valproate injection contains Sodium Valproate BP eqv. to Valproic Acid 500 mg in 5 ml

Pharmacology

  • Anti-epileptic activity against a variety of seizures
  • Increase in brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral and injection administration
  • Initial and maintenance dosage for adults and children
  • Dosage adjustments for different conditions
  • Intravenous infusion for adults and children

Interaction

  • Non specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
  • Interacts significantly with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential

Side Effects

  • Anorexia, nausea, vomiting
  • CNS effects including sedation, ataxia, tremor
  • Rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
  • Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma
  • Fulminate hepatitis
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Hyperammonemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Causes neural tube defects in newborn if exposed in the first trimester
  • Excretion in breast milk
  • No risk to the child through breast-feeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Monitoring of liver functions
  • No undue potential for bleeding before surgery
  • Care in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, systemic lupus erythematosus
  • False interpretation of urine ketone test
  • Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy
