Indications

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration
  • Sodium Valproate tablets once or twice daily

Pharmacology

  • Anti-epileptic activity

Interaction

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential

Side Effects

  • Anorexia, nausea, vomiting
  • Effects on CNS: sedation, ataxia, tremor
  • Rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
  • Elevation of liver enzymes, fulminate hepatitis, acute pancreatitis, hyperammonemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses the placenta
  • Associated with neural tube defects
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • No risk to the child when breastfed by a mother taking Sodium Valproate

  • Monitoring liver functions
  • Checking for potential bleeding before surgery
  • Careful use in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and systemic lupus erythematosus
  • False interpretation of urine ketone test
